Auditions Set For Oct. 7 and 9

Calling all area actors! Four adult men and five adult women are needed for Crest Area Theatre’s (CAT) upcoming holiday production, The Regifters! Auditions are Tuesday, October 7, and Thursday, October 9, 2014. Both auditions will be held at 7 p.m. in a location to be determined on the Southwestern Community College campus.

Performances are scheduled for December 5 – 7, 2014. Click here for a play synopsis. In addition to cast members, there is always a need for volunteers for set design and construction, lighting, sound, costumes, make up, and much, much more.

Crest Area Theatre is excited to be collaborating with the Southwestern Community College Theatre Club on this production. Loras Henshaw, a 50-something, absent-minded businessman
Bridget Henshaw, the plump wife of Loras, 50’s
Tom Mulligan, a blustery accountant who never stops accounting, 50’s
Mary Mulligan, Tom’s wife, 50ish
Jeff Cunningham, A momma’s boy caught in the middle of loyalty to his wife and to his mother, late 30’s
Laura Cunningham, wife of Jeff, late 30’s
Mrs. Cunningham, Jeff’s mother, mid-60’s
Kurt Weiss, a poor, humble blue-collar worker, 20’s
Katie Weiss, a quiet, playful woman with a big heart, early 20’s

News: Holiday Show Scheduled Dec 5-7


Crest Area Theatre has officially set the dates for a fun holiday production in December 2014. Be sure to save some time on December 5, 6 and/or 7 to attend The Regifters!

Here is what it’s about: When a couple “regifts” a not-so-great Christmas present, then finds out it’s worth a fortune, they will stop at nothing to get it back. But they’re not the only ones who rewrapped it! In the mad pursuit to reclaim the gift, everyone who gave it away learns about friendship, real wealth, and the value of a gift truly given.

Performances will take place at the SWCC Performing Arts Center in Creston, IA. More details will be released as the show gets closer.

A representative group of The Hallelujah Girls stormed the KSIB Radio studios in Creston, Iowa, on May 8, 2014, to discuss their May 9, 10 and 11th show. Mother’s Day Appointment with The Hallelujah Girls


This Mother’s Day, treat your mother, your wife, your girlfriends, and yourself to a Crest Area Theatre (CAT) performance of The Hallelujah Girls! Join us on May 9, 10 and 11, 2014, and witness the hilarity that abounds when the feisty females of Eden Falls, Georgia, decide to shake up their lives. Curtain is 7 p.m. on Friday (9th) and Saturday (10th), and 2 p.m. on Sunday (11th).

The action in this Southern comedy takes place in SPA-DEE-DAH!, an abandoned church-turned-day-spa where this group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. When the women rally to overcome their obstacles and launch their new and improved lives, you’ve got a side-splitting, joyful comedy that will make you laugh out loud and shout “Hallelujah!”

Crest Area Theatre has begun rehearsals for its next production, The Hallelujah Girls, directed by Cathy Whited.  Congratulations to the following southwest Iowa community members for being cast in the show (in order of appearance):

Hallelujah Girls is a light-hearted comedy about a group of female friends determined to live their lives to the fullest. Hallelujah Girls Auditions March 10 & 11

Auditions for Crest Area Theatre’s production of “The Hallelujah Girls” will be held on March 10 and 11, 2014, from 7 to 9 p.m.  This show is a light comedy with a cast of 6 women and 2 men, all playing characters in their mid-50s to mid 60s. Performances will be May 9, 10, and 11, 2014.

Auditions will be held in the Green Room next to the Southwestern Community College’s Performing Arts Center (same building as YMCA) in Creston, Iowa. Character descriptions are listed below.

  • Sugar Lee Thompkins is the dreamer who has invested everything in the purchase of an old church she will turn into a day spa.
  • Bunny Sutherland is a high school classmate (and nemesis) who wants the church for her own selfish reasons.
  • Bobby Dwayne Dillahunt is also a former classmate, and now is the contractor assisting in the repairs to the old church.
  • Carlene Travis is known fondly as “The Black Widow” – having outlived three husbands.
  • Nita Mooney has a grown son who moved back home and just won’t move out!
  • Mavis Flowers is married, but would consider faking her own death as a way out of the marriage.
  • Crystal Hart is ditzy, loves to dress up in holiday appropriate costumes, and rewrites the lyrics to popular Christmas songs.
  • Porter Padgett is Carlene’s boyfriend. He’s a little too loud, a little obnoxious, but a nice guy.
